Reflections on the 2012 ASAP Global Alliance Summit

It was the largest gathering of alliance management professionals anywhere in the world – ever. Three and a half days of educational sessions, receptions and networking, meetings with partners and clients, as well as a bit of glitz and glam (we were in Las Vegas after all) which demonstrated unequivocally that alliance management has arrived as a recognized capability.

Hard Hat Not Needed

In our conversations with alliance managers over the past several months we keep hearing that many of them have taken on a new job responsibility – managing an excavation. No, they’re not taking over the supervision of a construction site. They have been tasked with compiling a comprehensive inventory of ALL the alliances and other strategic collaborations their company has entered into.

At first blush this sounds like an easy assignment. Surprisingly, it is much more challenging than it seems. When we’ve asked alliance managers how many alliances their company has, the response we most often get is, “That’s a good question … I have no idea what the answer is … perhaps in the hundreds.”
